- What matters to you the most?
In order to live a meaningful life, it's important to recognize your personal motivations and their effect on your professional life.
Make Value-Based Decisions
When you act, think and speak in alignment with your values, your life is more congruent. In the workplace, it's essential to be in touch with the values you hold dear because it's easy to be pulled by people and circumstances that can compromise them. Sometimes your company's corporate culture may value attitudes and behaviors that conflict with yours.
A client I worked with discovered that transparency and teamwork were really important to him, and he soon realized that his work group did not share his perspective. He observed that the business rewarded a "take no prisoners" approach to moving major initiatives forward, and his colleagues often stretched the truth to get traction on their pet projects. This client had a preference for a cooperative and collaborative approach to work items, but a majority of his co-workers rarely displayed these traits.
After months of being affected by the brash approach of his colleagues, the client realized that his environment was in direct conflict with what mattered the most to him. He suffered from high stress and the uncertainty of knowing that neither his peers nor his managers appreciated the attributes that came naturally to him, and that were largely responsible for his history of success at other companies. He made the decision to find another opportunity.
